Position Description: Minister of Music

Position summary: The Minister of Music leads the congregation in music and worship, working closely with the pastoral staff, accompanist and lay leaders to integrate music and art into the worship experience. The Minister of Music directs the choir and supervises the organist/pianist. This is a year-round, salaried position averaging 15 hours per week
Reports to: Senior Minister
Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a degree in music (or commensurate experience); knowledge of church music including experience in diverse music and worship styles; experience in choral direction; an ability to foster community; a capacity to connect the music ministry with the congregation’s mission.
Desired qualities: The successful candidate will demonstrate theological depth; an ability to work with a wide variety of people, as part of a team of both staff and laity; creativity, flexibility and initiative; an energetic and enthusiastic voice for the music ministry that inspires participation; the ability to both support and challenge/stretch a volunteer choir; the ability to teach and conduct a variety of music. The Minister of Music will help the congregation dream and explore a music and worship program that is multi-racial, multi-generational, and multi-cultural.
Areas of responsibility:
Direction of the Adult Choir
• Conduct the choir in the weekly worship service on Sundays between Labor Day and the second Sunday in June, and one Sunday each in July and August.
• Conduct the choir in special services during the year.
• Coordinate and lead weekly rehearsals during the choir year, currently Thursdays 7:00–8:30 pm
• Develop the choir’s capacity and growth through teaching, personal support, collaboration
with Disciples/other faith-based musicians in the area, and identifying potential new members
• Arrange for guest musicians during regular services, during special worship services, for funerals if requested and during the summer months when the choir is not scheduled to sing
Worship Planning and Participation
• Select hymns and service music, in conjunction with the pastoral staff and organist/pianist
• Participate in Sunday morning worship
• Participate in worship planning and evaluation with staff and lay leadership
• Participate in long-term planning in music and worship
Development of the Music Ministry
• Explore new opportunities in music including a children’s choir directed either by the Minister of Music or a lay member, instrumental offerings, and small group special music
• Lead or support events offered to the community in music and the arts
• Support the congregation in exploring different styles of music and worship
Supervision
• Supervise and support the organist/pianist
• Plan and carry out an annual evaluation of the organist/pianist with the Senior Pastor
Administration
• Oversee and develop the music library
• Communicate regularly with choir members
• Administer the annual music budget and make recommendations about the music budget as part of the overall budgeting process each spring
• Attend weekly staff meetings and collaborate with the pastoral staff in providing leadership to the congregation
• Attend other meetings as needed for connection and collaboration

Schedule: This position is a year-round, part-time, salaried position averaging 15 hours per week. Schedule may vary by week or season:
Tuesdays: 9:00am-12:00am (Staff meetings and planning
Thursdays: 6:30pm-9:00pm (choir rehearsal)
Sundays: 8:30am-1:00pm (worship and preparation)
Additional time for planning, rehearsing, other projects, and administration
Salary Range: $25,000-$30,000 per year
